Flash mobs are still hot. Recently at the University of San Diego, a group of students ended a press conference on an emotional high after their unexpected choreographed dance. The “lights off” event, called “Running on Sunshine” introduced a new solar-powered campus thanks to Stalwart Communications’ client AMSOLAR Corporation. The band of seemingly ordinary students created the most extraordinary thing I’ve ever seen at a news conference.
If the opportunity presents itself, I’d recommend advising a client to create a flash mob. Why?
- It’s inexpensive – If you are fortunate enough to have a group of volunteers and mobilize over social media channels, the flash is free. That means such activity isn’t limited to big companies, but well suited for start-ups, small businesses and non-profits. Invest in an organizer if you have a budget.
- It’s a talker – While watching the USD video, you hear gasps and cheering throughout the crowd. Attendees are pulling out their smartphones and cameras. Immediately, people are drawn to capture and share the creativity. That’s what we all strive for with word of mouth. It just HAS to be done well.
- It’s energizing – I really love the idea of livelying up an event like a press conference with some flash mob energy. You’ll notice some speakers joining the mob and dancing in the USD video. That is priceless! It felt like the flash mob was inviting the crowd to become part of this new solar movement. I think that sentiment could work for many other calls to action.
I’m happy to see that the flash mob is still alive and well leading into 2011!
