Hospice is first in county to provide targeted care for dying veterans
Military veterans have survived enemy attacks, treks through strange lands and sometimes debilitating injuries or lost friends. But at a certain point in life, every veteran, just like everyone else, will stop surviving.
As veterans age and die, they face a unique set of challenges, including an engrained stoicism that can make it difficult for them to ask for help, memories that can trigger anxiety and stress and unusual medical issues that stem from their time spent in battle, said Cindy Hutchinson, the director of patient care at San Diego-based LightBridge Hospice.
To meet these needs, two years ago LightBridge began to focus some of its end-of-life care specifically on veterans. Recently, the hospice became the first in San Diego County to earn a “Level II” certification in a nonprofit program that highlights hospices for veterans.
